In recent years Spring Valley has experienced many young families moving into the area and, as a result, academic and recreational facilities have been creating to meet the demand of the fast-growing community. The La Mesa-Spring Valley School District serves 15,000 students (from La Mesa, a portion of El Cajon, and the Mt. Helix, Casa de Oro, and Spring Valley communities) in 18 elementary schools (grades K-5) and four middle schools (grades 6 to 8). The Grossmont Union High School District serves high school students, specifically Mt. Miguel High serving Spring Valley.

The local community college, Cuyamaca College, is a spacious campus situated on a hillside crest, and offers many classes and activities for local residents. In 1995 the college opened a $17.5 million athletic complex, gym, and fitness center with outdoor facilities providing more sporting amenities for residents and students. Spring Valley also opened a "Tween and Teen Center" in 1996 which provides games, computers, tutoring, and counseling. The same year a park with two lighted baseball diamonds and overlays to allow for soccer games was opened. Throughout the community you will find involvement and interest in youth activities, with local groups often times arranging sports for children utilizing school playgrounds and parks for these activities.

For everyday conveniences, though, modern shopping plazas with supermarkets, shops, and a variety of restaurants are available.
